One of the many blessings of living in Austin is that I get to live close to my Dad's mother which we siblings have always affectionately referred to as "grandmother". I have tried to make it a point to go see her for dinner every week or so and we undoubtedly will end up in the living room chatting about life and love. She is 91 years old so she has a lot of life to chat about :)
I have learned so many things from this woman and the other night when I came home I felt the need to jot a few of them down so that I can always remember them. In true Logan style she can have strong opinions - which some I agree with and some I don't - but nonetheless... I want to remember them forever. So here we go...
Things I've learned from my grandmother:
- Don't name your child something different than what you are going to call them... that can get confusing.
- Small weddings are the best. If you want a big production than you want a wedding not a marriage... and the marriage is the fun part.
- Wait forever for the right guy. It's a much bigger hell married to the wrong guy than to be single forever.
- Fight hard for family.
- Do what you love. Don't settle (especially at my age) for something that sells you short. Dream. Don't work for a paycheck.
- People can take care of themselves when they come over.
- Watching squirrels and birds do life in the backyard is far more entertaining than anything on TV these days.
- Don't bicker with one another. It's not worth it.
- Hug each other even when you're sweaty. Love can't smell.
- Love is just wanting to be together. My grandfather would have gone anywhere with my grandmother just so he could be with her.
- No one knows what heaven will be like but she wants to think about it like the Alan Jackson song... strolling across heaven with my grandfather who has already gone to dance.
- Older kids shouldn't go trick or treating... it's like robbery.
- If you spill something on the carpet and it's stained forever, just paint a picture over it.
- Don't weigh yourself. Just cut back on the sweets when your jeans start to get tight.
- I will be deeply loved by her forever.
